Your own domain name and who owns it

Every paid plan includes one domain name and email forwarding on that domain. You pick the name when you pay: the form checks whether it is free and shows what the extension costs. Common extensions are included: .nl, .com, .net, .org, .eu, .be, .dev and .xyz. If an extension costs more than your plan covers, such as .app or a premium extension, and we register it for you, you pay the difference per month on top of your plan. The full list with prices is on our domains page.

After your payment everything happens by itself: we register the domain in your name, point it at your site, set up SSL and forward email to the address you signed up with. You get an email as soon as it is live, and your portal shows which step it is at. Is your name taken after all? Then we email you free alternatives and you reply with your choice.

Who owns the domain? You do. We register it in your name and act as the technical contact so renewals and questions land with us. Want to leave? Request the transfer code from your site's page in the portal; we unlock the domain and email you the code.

Already have a domain? Tick "this domain is mine" when you pay. Your domain stays with your current provider; you change two nameservers there, and we set up the rest. Before we send you the nameservers, we copy the records we find on your domain into our zone, except the ones for your current site, and if you use your own mail server we check it by hand as well. That way your email keeps going to that mail server. A record with an unusual name is not always found; if you use the domain for something like that, such as your own subdomain, reply to the email with the nameservers. We remind you once if they are not changed after a few days. Some website builders don't let you change nameservers. If your domain is with one of them, ask them for the transfer code first and move the domain to a provider where you can; we don't take domain transfers ourselves yet.

Extra domains can be added on every plan under Settings for your site: a standard extension costs 1 euro per month, plus any surcharge for that extension, and is free for the first six months; a premium extension costs 2 euros per month plus the difference for that extension.

One main address. Once your domain is live, your trial address, www and any extra domains forward to it with a permanent redirect, path included. Search engines then see one site instead of several copies.

Old addresses from your previous site. Did your old site have pages like /gallery or /our-services that now have another name? Put a file called _redirects in the root of your site, with one line per old address: the old path, the new path and optionally a code, such as /gallery /photos 301. A line like /blog/* /news/:splat moves a whole folder. Without a code we send a permanent redirect (301). The new path is always a page on your own site, and your home page stays index.html. If a line is wrong, we tell you which one when you upload.
