A site that works on a phone and in Google

Most people who visit a small business site do so on a phone, and Google judges your site by its phone version. Check these points before you publish, or give this page to the AI tool that builds your site. The AGENTS.md from the portal already contains them.

On a phone

  • Every page has <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> in its <head>. Without it a phone shows a shrunken desktop page.
  • Nothing is wider than the screen. Try it at 360 and 390 pixels wide. Give images max-width: 100% and put a wide table in its own scrolling box.
  • Buttons and links are at least 24 by 24 pixels, and 44 by 44 is better.
  • Text is at least 16 pixels, and so are form fields: below 16 pixels an iPhone zooms in as soon as you tap one.
  • A menu opens when you tap it. A phone has no hover.
  • Form fields have the right type, inputmode and autocomplete, such as type="tel" and autocomplete="tel" for a phone number.

Images

  • Every <img> has a width, a height and an alt text. Then the page does not jump while it loads, and a screen reader knows what is in the picture.
  • Keep a photo under 500 KB and under 2400 pixels wide. WebP or AVIF saves the most.
  • Give it a name that says what is in it: kitchen-renovation-zwolle.jpg instead of IMG_1234.jpg.
  • With a Website we remove the location (GPS) from your photos before they go online. If that fails for a photo, the response of your publication says so, see What gets scanned. In an App you do this yourself.

In Google

  • Every page has its own <title>, a <meta name="description"> and exactly one <h1>.
  • canonical and og:url point to the address where the page is live. With a domain of your own, that is the domain and not the .dorelli.cloud address.
  • Put your business details in JSON-LD with a schema.org type such as LocalBusiness, HairSalon or HomeAndConstructionBusiness, with at least name and address. The phone number there is the same as the one on the page, and use one number on every page.
  • Leave AggregateRating and Review about your own business out of the JSON-LD. Google does not show stars for reviews a business publishes about itself.
  • Links point to pages that exist.
  • For a Website: on its .dorelli.cloud address a trial site stays out of Google. On a domain of your own, or with a subscription, Google may index it, and if your site has no sitemap.xml of its own, we make one from your pages.

Privacy

  • Do not load your fonts from Google Fonts: Google then receives the IP address of every visitor. Put them in your CSS as a data: URI in @font-face, or use the fonts of the device. A subset in woff2 with one or two weights keeps that small. With a Website, a font file in your site's folder does not load on a .dorelli.cloud address, because the site runs there in a closed sandbox; the browser then quietly shows another font.
  • A YouTube video, a Google Maps map or a Facebook button also sends visitor data to those companies. Mention them in your privacy statement.
